KiwiSaver options

Most New Zealanders under the age of 65 are eligible to join KiwiSaver-including those who are already in a super scheme like the PSS.

Information for recruits

You have several options if you're already a member of KiwiSaver when you join Police.

You can continue your contributions to KiwiSaver (although Police won't make employer contributions on your behalf), or if you don't want to continue contributing, you can apply for a contributions holiday. Read more about your options here.

Information for other PSS members

Being a member of the PSS (and receiving the employer contribution) doesn't stop you joining KiwiSaver. You won't, however, be eligible for KiwiSaver employer contributions because you are already receiving PSS employer contributions. This applies both to constabulary and non-constabulary members. You will get the other KiwiSaver benefits explained below.

The benefits of KiwiSaver

Like the PSS, the benefit you get is made up of contributions plus (or minus) earnings minus fees. Unlike the PSS, you generally can't access your money until you reach age 65, but you will qualify for member tax credits. The government will contribute around $10 a week for every $20 you contribute up to $521.43 a year. That means, to receive the maximum tax credit, you need to contribute at least $1,042.86 a year.

What you need to contribute

If you join KiwiSaver, you'll need to pay a minimum of 3% of your gross salary or wages. Alternatively, you can choose to contribute 4% or 8%. Talk to your Payroll Officer if you have questions about contributions.

How to enrol

There are two ways you can join KiwiSaver. You can get a KiwiSaver information pack (KS3) from Payroll and complete a KiwiSaver deduction form (KS2). You can also join through a KiwiSaver provider.
